JOHN IT WAS A GREAT SHOW AT THE CANAL STREET TAVERN SAT. NITE. JUST AS EVERYONE ELSE HAS SAID BOY DID YOU TAKE ME BACK TO A PLACE WHERE LIFE WAS MUCH SIMPLER EXEPT FOR THE 'NAM. TO SIT AND LISTEN TO THE MUSIC ALL THAT WAS MISSING WAS THE MIRRORED GLOBE FROM THE BLUE MOON BALLROOM. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES DONT STAY AWAY FROM HOME FOR THAT MANY YEARS
loved the music in the 70's none of my friends now has ever heard your music. they will now
John: My wife and I really enjoyed seeing you at Canal Street in Dayton the other night. The acoustic Stones music was great! Bought the new CD on the way out. Thirty years ago I would have bet against me ever buying such a thing - but you've given it new life. Also great to hear some of the old Batdorf and Rodney stuff - even though it's 30 years old - its timeless and still stands up (we will have to buy the CDs now). You and Stanley really compliment each other. It's been fun watching your career unfold - first watching you bang out Monkee's tunes on the piano at kid birthday parties at the Semler farm (mid 60s) - those first B & R albums (early 70s) - a Silver concert at Wittenberg U (late 70s) - hearing your voice and music on TV shows and commercials (80s and 90s) - and now back to Dayton to play acoustic Stones - what a trip!Your cousin Kurt wanted me to bring my Silver Album to Canal Street - but I opted not too - as I thought you wouldn't appreciate him screaming his requests for "Wham Bam"? from the audience! You taught me my first song (lick) on the guitar at one of those Semler farm visits way back when - believe it was "Little Black Egg"?. Since then I never have been far from a guitar and I thank you for that. Good luck!
John - I just wrote a short personal note to you but realized there may be some people who would like to know about your beginnings. When you were 14 - we(the Trojans-a Dayton Ohio group specializing in Dylan and other not so often played artists)saw you at the Blue Moon in Xenia. Our lead singer was leaving for Viet Nam and we said "That's our new lead singer" You came to my parents house for an audition - bringing your electric piano - and blew us away with your "Summer in the City" Jon Sebastian tune. Immediately you became the center of the Trojans. All the teenie boopers would scream and holler when you'd get down on your knees and wale a tune like "Ruby Tuesday" or "I've Got You Babe". Our style changed to adapt to your talents and it certainly launched us into sub orbit. When we all graduated from high school (you were two years younger than us) we went to college and you went to LA. That's when you left sub orbit and we all know the rest. I'm glad you've never lost your roots. That was illustrated when you called me to give me front row seats at a B&R concert in Philly when I was in medical school. We stood up and left before Bread came on stage because you and Mark were done. As far as we were concerned - the concert was over. People thought we were weird to leave front row seats - but we old Trojans needed to discuss a few things. It really amused me yesterday when I called you and you asked me if I ever finished medical school. I think that radical - long haired medical student (still living in his rock and roll days)didn't inspire much confidence that I would become a surgeon. Great to see you and come full circle after 40 years. Hope to see you again soon.
Great seeing you last night John. When you get to Maui look us up so we can rehash the primitive days in the Trojans.
Back in "the good ole days" (was it '73 or '74?) - I had the wonderful opportunity to see Batdorf and Rodney with Harry Chapin at Wright State University. It was one of those concerts I've never forgotten. I was elated when I discovered you were going to be playing at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton. I was one of the first people in line and absolutely loved the show last night. The acoustic melodies were spell binding. When you played some of your earlier songs - it brought back so many memories and I was suprised I remembered some of the lyrics. I hope you didn't mind my harmonizing at the side of the stage. Keep up the great work - your musical talent is to be commended.
Hi! from your cousins in OH Look forward to seeing you this week!
Date: Tue May 02 5:04:22 2006 Lebanon OH I saw Batdorf & Rodney about '74 near UCONN. It was a religious experience. No other concert ever hit the core of my being like that one. I think I may have even told them that on break.(no pick-up intended)So crisp - so clear - so TIGHT! Later - I became an entertainer myself. Tonight I was surfing and just "rediscovered" the music. Now I see Batdorf will be in Dayton in just 2 weeks! My first thoughts are - I can't take smokey bars anymore - alas - it's a smoke free event! That's too much of a coincidence to pass up. But how will it be without Rodney? Thanx for being some of the great memories of my youth. Any chance it was a Holy Ghost anointing I was perceiving?
Date: Mon Apr 17 23:06:44 2006 Toledo - Ohio I saw John and Mark in Beavercreek - along with Harry Chapin. It was a great night of what is now vintage 70's music. I was glad to be able to add B&R to my collection. It is unique and excellent music.
Date: Sat Apr 15 17:51:22 2006 Houston Texas In 1972 & 1973 - I managed a little record shop in Tampa - Florida called "Record City". I was 17. When "Home Again" came out I really liked it and it sold like hotcakes! I recently heard it on my satellite radio. You guys are great. Thanks for the memories!
Thanks for friending my son's band - Under Your Bed on MySpace recently. I saw Batdorf & Rodney perform in maybe 1972 at the Bitter End. I believe it was a release party for your first album together as Batdorf & Rodney. It was great - remember it like it was yesterday. Glad to see you are still cooking. Love your stuff.Best - Joe Marchione
I have been looking vainly for "Life Is You" as a CD -- I still have the record. Please make it available (complete with the calligraphy on the liner) on CD soon. The music takes me way back and since your on the iPod in the OR - maybe a new generation will be introduced to your music. Thanks...Tim Trotter
