Description
Why is this album called ANTHEM FOR THE DAMNED? Why is the cover art so mysteriously melancholy and yet on this inner page the art offers a feeling of hope. The truth is, the opening cut and title of the album is reaching out to those who find their world so hopeless that they are contemplating putting an end to the race they’ve been running…and sadly there are far too many trapped in that place…but the anthem cries out to those who have judged themselves as worthless also rans. It is to you I sing “It’s not your time, it’s not this place, just wait cause the rescue is coming. And I’ll be damned if I don’t sing: Your time’s gonna come BUT IT’S NOT TODAY”
As a singer/songwriter who has been transformed my entire life by the power of song, I wish this “anthem for the damned” could start a healing of a shattered life and convince anyone counting down to oblivion to just wait five minutes. Don’t surrender just yet. This moment may seem like it will last forever, but it won’t. Give the title song a chance to speak to your broken heart and then give the rest of the album a chance. The songs that follow represent so much that’s worth living for. The many, many things we can learn about ourselves that we never knew we never knew; our responsibilities and opportunities to reach beyond ourselves to help others find a state of grace that keeps them holding on; and the stewardship of what Mother Nature has blessed us with and is calling us to do; the magic of precious innocent children we can protect and inspire; and the reflection of 50 years with the partner who has given life and love a thousand albums worth of meaning; and then concluding with one of the greatest truths about life itself:
This is a place we need to honor, this is a place that we should save, this is a place we must not alter, this is a place we cannot trade!
To every one who listens to this collection of songs I hope they find you at the right time in the right place.
Track 01 – Anthem For The Damned
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Piano and Percussion
Dean Parks: Electric Guitars
Chad Watson: Bass
There’s anthems for those who
Never surrender til they achieve their goals
There’s anthems for those who
Daily reconquer the darkest night of their souls
But where’s the anthem for the unsung lost ones
Who see themselves as worthless also rans
About to end the race that they’ve quit running
It’s not your time, it’s not this place
Just wait cause the rescue is coming
And I’ll be damned if I don’t sing
Your time’s gonna come but it’s not today
This is the anthem for all the damned ones
Judged by themselves alone
The hand that life gave them who’d want to save them
Unseen unheard and unknown
So who would give a damn for all the damned ones
Hush up and listen to a friend that’s near
It’s the anthem that you need to hear now
Chorus
You think your life’s been, nothing but failure every step you climb
Don’t you go leaving the ones who’re praying now you’ll fail one more time
Instrumental
So who would give a damn for all the damned ones
Hush up and listen to a friend that’s near
It’s the anthem that you need to hear now
Chorus
Track 02 – The State I’m In
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Bass, Piano and Percussion
Dean Parks: Electric Guitars
The weather’s better in the state I’m in
It’s just so beautiful and I plan to stay
Left all the darkness in the state I’ve been
The state I’m in, is not that way
People are nicer in the state I’m in
They speak up freely and they all have their say
But it’s just different than the states I’ve been
Contention ends at the end of the day
It’s not a dream, this place is real
It took me in when I came here to heal
They see beyond the harships I faced
I wanna stay here in this new found place
The roads are better in the state I’m in
So many different choices and all are free
If you’re lost on the road to what you want
There’s maps to find the road to what you need
It’s not a dream, this place is real
It took me in when I came here to heal
There is a vibe here that I can embrace
Thinking of making this my new home base
Just west of anxiety and just north of fear
A safe society is waiting here
Follow the GPS in your soul
Right after broken take the turnoff to whole
It’s not a dream, this place is real
It took me in when I came here to heal
They see beyond the hardhips I’ve faced
I’m making my home in the STATE of GRACE
I’m stayin’ right here in the STATE of GRACE
Track 03 – Burn It Down
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Bass, Piano and Percussion
Dean Parks: Electric Guitars
I have built a castle, my own private chapel, with an alter to myself
There I am surrounded, with gold records mounted
All my trophies on the shelf,
It’s got kinda crowded, maybe I’ll expand,
Need more room for showing. just how great I am
Oh no, I don’t need this any longer
Oh no, this ego breeding ground
Oh no the stench of I me mine grows stronger
The record of that life must be rewound
I think it’s time I finally burn it down.
What if all the ashes, trigger all the flashes of the victories in the past
Will I run reclaiming, fame I’d won proclaiming,
Proof of brilliance that will last
Will there be a moment. my old self succumbs
To the voices crying, what have you just done
Chorus
Walking in rubble
Will I just stumble
Through the smoke down my old hall of fame
Will I start letting
Myself regretting
I let my career go down in flames
Oh no, I don’t need this any longer
Oh no, this ego breeding ground
Oh no this stench of I me mine grows stronger
The record of that life must be rewound
Oh no, I don’t want this any longer
Oh no, this ego breeding ground
Oh no the stench of I me mine grows stronger
The record of that life must be rewound
I think it’s time I finally burn it down …burn it down
Track 04 – Help Me I’m Falling
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Bass, Piano and Percussion
Michael Dowdle: Electric Guitars
Please help me I’m falling, catch me if you can
If you’re too late to, I will understand
I’ve fallen before and, cuts and bruises burn
Falling is the price for lessons learned
It’s after the falling I just might see
The falling’s a step that was meant to be
After the falling, I’ll learn somehow
And that’s why I need you more than ever now
It’s not about falling, so in love with you
It how I’m so grateful. you’ve always come through
So that’s why I’m calling to my truest friend
Who I need to save me, time and time again
It’s after the falling I just might see
The falling’s a step that was meant to be
After the falling, I’ll learn somehow
And that’s why I need you more than ever now
I know you’ve shown
Patient understanding, more than I have ever known
I know I’ve grown
Every moment you assured me, I am not alone
Please help me I’ve fallen, fallen again and again
I’ve fallen
Please help me I’ve fallen
Track 05 – 50
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Bass, Piano and Percussion
Michael Dowdle: Electric Guitars
Looking back on fifty years being together until now
The toasts go on and on until they close the restaurant down
Making up true stories with little lies that we allow
The fiction’s more fun when it’s just a fantasy
But there’s a toast that we don’t share
That’s ours exclusively
If we spoke up and told the truth
You’d die of jealousy
We’re sorry but we hide this cuz
In all humility
No one who’s ever tied the knot’s been as blessed as we
Thinking bout what’s yet to come anniversaries after now
Will we need assistance to transport us hours before sundown
All the toasting folks from down the hall pretend that we
No longer know fiction from reality
But there’s a toast that we don’t share
That’s ours exclusively
If we spoke up and told the truth
You’d die of jealousy
We’re sorry but we hide this cuz
In all humility
No one who’s ever tied the knot’s has been as blessed as you and me
Solo
Looking back on fifty years of toasting with a crowd
It’s time that we share a secret we’ve kept til now
But there’s a toast that we haven’t shared
That’s ours exclusively
If we spoke up and told the truth
You’d die of jealousy
We’re sorry but we hide this cuz
In all humility
No one who’s ever tied the knot’s been as blessed as we
Looking back on fifty years being together until now
It’s time that we share the secret we kept til now
It’s time that we shared the secret we’ve kept til now
Track 06 – You Won’t Be Denied
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Bass, Piano and Percussion
Michael Dowdle: Electric Guitars
James Harrah: Electric Guitars
BG Vox: Matthew Batdorf
When you need someone you can lean on
When you’re scared that some help won’t come now
One more day to try and cling to
Hope that is lost when all your friends are gone
When you wait for some second chances
When forgiveness just may not come
Every deck has been stacked against you
And all the fairness remains undone
You don’t be denied you don’t be denied
Someone who will stand with you
You won’t be denied you won’t be denied
Someone who won’t dismiss you
Someone like me
When you dream all the dreams worth dreaming
No one hears not a single word now
Silence is a complete rejection,
Not being seen and not being heard
You won’t be denied you won’t be denied
Someone who really sees you
You won’t be denied, you won’t be denied
Someone who truly hears you
Someone like me
History, would tell you, you shouldn’t count on me now
Days past I wasn’t there then. I walked away
I should have cared then
Hoping you, won’t deny me. a chance to show
I’ve changed now
A chance to be the one I know that I can be
I promise I will be
You don’t be denied you don’t be denied
Someone who will stand with you
You won’t be denied you won’t be denied
Someone who won’t dismiss you
You won’t be denied, you won’t be denied
One who’s testifying for you
You won’t be denied, you won’t be denied
One who’s undenyingly for you. someone like me
Track 07 – I Never Knew
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Bass, Piano and Percussion
James Harrah: Electric Guitars
All that you’ve kept hidden
Still you kept on livin true
Baby I never knew
That the load you carried
The pain so deeply buried too
And no one ever knew
Careless words that I have spoken
Never knowing you were broken
What are the words that erase all the hurt unintended. that’s on me
What can I say that will take it away what offended painfully
I keep trying to blame the fact
I said things I just can’t, can’t take back
Cause I never knew all the things that you
Really didn’t want me to
It’s an awkward feeling
Every time I’m seeing you
Someone I never knew
Words that were so judgemental
I claim were accidental too
Cause I never knew
Careless words that I have spoken
Never knowing you were broken
What are the words that erase all the hurt unintended, that’s on me
What can I say that will take it away what offended, painfully
I keep trying to blame the fact
I said things I just can’t, can’t take back
Cause I never knew all the things that you
Really didn’t want me to
I’m asking for your forgiveness
That may be hard to give
I need to make a course correction
For as long as I live
What are the words that erase all the hurt unintended
(that’s on me)
What can I say that will take it away what offended
(painfully)
I keep trying to change the fact
I said things I just can’t, can’t take back
Cause I never knew all the things that you
really didn’t want me to
Track 08 – Sunday with Sophie
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Piano and Percussion
Michael Dowdle: Electric Guitars
First time that I met a babe named Sophie
It was at a party Sunday night
Barely 4 months old and when we first saw her
Everybody fought to hold her tight
When somebody held her up for standing
Everybody cheered her chunky thighs
We were looking at a perfect angel
All we saw was sweetness was in her eyes
Dare I tell you the child was more than just perfect
She really changed the room
Something happens inside where your heart is seeing
A heavenly flower in bloom
So when Sofie left the spell was lingering
One brought by that tiny little girl
If she could change us all in just one evening
Think how she is gonna change the world
Instrumental
Dare I tell you the child was more than just perfect
She really changed the room
Something happens inside where your heart is seeing
A heavenly flower in bloom
So when Sofie left the spell was lingering
One brought by that tiny little girl
If she could change us all in just one evening
Think how she is gonna change the world
So when Sofie left the spell was lingering
One brought by that tiny little girl
If she could change us all in just one evening
Think how she is gonna change the world
Sofie has come to change the world
Track 09 – Is It The End Or the Beginning
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Piano and Percussion
James Harrah: Electric Guitars
A change is in the air
(But) which way is the wind blowing
Changes are everywhere
(But) no one is sure where we’re going
Tomorrow is an unknown mystery
Nobody knows what it will be
Changes are in the air
But where oh where are they taking me
In the race we call life, we’re all wondering
Have we been losing or winning?
At the dawn of the day. why do we say:
Is it the End or the, Is it the End or the Beginning?
Are we all working to
End all that we’ve be through hoping
We’ll make a better way
Or simply spend each day coping
Tomorrow is an unknown mystery
Nobody knows what it will be
Changes are in the air
But where or where are they taking me
Chorus
Is it all over or has it begun
Do we press onward or are we just done
A change is in the air
(But) which way is the wind blowing
Changes are everywhere
(But) no one is sure where we’re going
Tomorrow is an unknown mystery
Nobody knows what it will be
Changes are in the air
But where oh where are they taking me
Chorus
Track 10 – Mother Nature’s Calling
Lyrics
John Batdorf: Acoustic Guitars, Vocals, Piano and Percussion
Mother Nature Guest Vocalist: Arlene Kole
BG Vox: Brett Batdorf and Matthew Batdorf
The sound of an earthquake makes every soul shake
Is the sky falling, Mother Nature’s callin’
Glaciers are melting, deserts are sweltering
Fires are sprawling, Mother nature’s callin’
Mother Nature’s calling
Wond’ring if you really love me
And what I’ve given you
If you do then take care of me
And do what you can do
Hear those volcanos, and where hurricanes blow
Why are we stalling Mother Nature’s callin’
Thought we were smarter, could we try harder
Why the Stonewalling Mother Nature’s callin’
Mother Nature’s callin’
Wond’ring if you really love me
And what I’ve given you
If you do then take care of me
And do what you can do
The path we’ve been following
Needs overhauling
Problems needs solving
Mother Nature’s callin’
Wond’ring if you really love me
And what I’ve given you
If you do then take care of me
And do what you can do
Oceans keep rising, we’re all fantasizing
Is the sky falling, Mother Nature’s callin’
Glaciers are melting, deserts are sweltering
Fires are sprawling, Mother nature’s calling
Mother Nature’s callin’
Track 11 – This Is The Place
Lyrics
Acoustic Guitars, Vocals and Piano: John Batdorf
Whatever happened to Old Miller’s pond
Why couldn’t somebody see
The way that it was, made us better because
That was where we made memories
All my life I have dreamed of the day when the children
Could see and could feel something honest and real
In a place, one special place we’d call home
This is the place we need to honor,
This is a place that we must save
This is a place we should not alter
This is a place we must not trade
The greatest gifts we give our children
Are not the things our money makes
Give them the world give them a treasure
So they can have memories of this place
All our lives I have dreamed of the day when our children
Could see and could feel something honest and real
In a place, one special place we’d all call home
This is the place we need to honor,
This is a place that we must save
This is a place we should not alter
This is a place we must not trade
The greatest gifts we give our children
Are not the things our money makes
Give them the world give them a treasure
So they can make memories of this place
So they can make memories of this place
So they can have memories of this place
