Back in September of 2025, I had a musical idea for a song. I had released “Anthem For The Damned” some months earlier and wasn’t really ready to jump back into the writing mode but I did indeed jump right in. There was so much to write about and so the “Singles” project began with the song “Time Bombs”. Soon after that song was recorded, the writing juices really started revving up so I wrote another song, “Suffering”. Since the song content was so relevant with the times, I decided to release them both as singles. Both songs were very well received with hundreds of radio stations all over the world, I thought why stop now. Next thing you know I wrote “I’ll Stand Ready” and “Just Another Day In Paradise”. These songs were also well received and at that point, I was all in. Next came, “One Tune”, “We Oughta Know By Now” and “People Like Me” written and released as singles. At that point I forged ahead with three more songs. “In The Middle Of It All”, “Puppy Love 2.0”, “Unfamiliar” and I thought I was done. 10 songs was clearly enough to complete the album but from out of the blue, I heard a melody in my head that wouldn’t rest until starting writing it. “Maybe Tomorrow” which I am so proud of and so happy I listened to my heart. It had to be written. My songwriting “brother from a different mother”, Michael McLean co-wrote 9 of these and at last, we have a new album of new songs that wasn’t planned but couldn’t be stopped.

I started this song writing process back when I was 16 and have never stopped. At 74, as long as the songs keep coming, I will keep sharing. Thank you all for a lifetime of support and I hope you enjoy the new music as much as I enjoyed creating it!

I think I finally found the spot I haven’t thought about a lot
That hidden place where all the answers are

For me it’s been so hard to find I guess that I was simply blind
But now it’s shining like a northern star

I thought it was hidden somewhere, until I found it was right there

In the middle of the night, the middle of the fight,
The middle of the questions rising
In the middle of the prayer, and no one seems to care
And everything’s demoralizing
I’ve circled my wagons shaking, protecting my heart that’s breaking
When all the help I need is waiting there for me, in the middle of it all

And when the truth of life returns, that I’ve got so much more to learn
Then something freezes and I can’t move on
And I am tempted to believe, that there is something wrong with me
Til I discover hope is never gone

Be still and there is a feeling, that’s always been there revealing

In the middle of the drought, the middle of the doubt
If you take a leap of faith who’ll catch you

In the middle of a choice, when you can’t hear a voice
You can trust in when you need a rescue

Re-circle those wagons shaking, protecting a heart that’s breaking
Cause all the hope I need is always there for me
In the middle of it all

Every time that I climb
Falling leads to more grieving
When I can’t, carry on
Something’s there that keeps on believing

Surrendering brings the healing the healing, so I can learn what it’s teaching
That all the love I need is always there for me, In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all, In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all, In the middle of it all

The clock keeps ticking it’s been so sickening since the first stone was thrown
Can there be healing without a reckoning the guilty must atone
Which story are we repeating who’s fault are the injuries
Who needs a beating for the mistreating I’m sure it’s them not me…..
Oh and…

(Chorus)
Who’s gonna detonate the time bomb that’s raging in every heart
And who’ll survive, who’ll be alive when the next time bomb ticking starts

Was there a moment somewhere in history Abel was saved by Cain
When will the whole world enter recovery addicted to placing blame
There’s not much hope I am seeing, I’m sure who caused my injuries
Who needs a beating for the mistreating I’m sure it’s them not me…..
Oh and…

(Chorus)

(Bridge)

We are the time bombs we are the time bombs
Who’ll be first to blow the fuse
We are the time bombs we are the time bombs
No matter who goes first and we all will lose
The clock keeps ticking it’s been so sickenin’
Oh….

Chorus) 2xs

Who’s gonna detonate the time bomb
That’s raging in every heart
And who’ll survive who’ll be alive
When the next time bomb ticking starts

Which story am I repeating, who’s fault are the injuries
Who feels the shame, could it be that it’s me

Today there’s suffering all around the world
Today the pain is everywhere
But until now I’ve kept it where I could just sidestep the
Suffering more than any one can bear

But now I’m
Carrying a burden that is far too heavy
More than I have known before
And in my new found suffering
Some how my heart’s been expanding
Making room to help you carry……….yours
Today There’s suffering all around the world
And I’m connecting to it all
And from the pain I’m feeling, how can I start the healing
For the victims of the fall

So now I’m
Carrying a burden that is far too heavy
More than I have known before
But in my new found suffering
Some how my heart’s been expanding
Making  room to help you carry……….yours
So what about the rain
What about the hope eroding
What about the pain that’s in my heart
What about the rain
What about the hope eroding
My suffering has helped me make a start

So now I’m
Carrying a burden that is far too heavy
More than I have known before
But in my new found suffering
Some how my heart’s been expanding
Making room to help you carry……….yours
What about the rain

Why does it all seem unfamiliar, when was the hour that it all changed I
Don’t recognize it just who disguised it anyway

Where was the place and what was happening,
When my whole life began rearranging was
I really there and so unaware until today
Don’t know how long I can carry on… this way

Don’t want to live in this world any longer
Don’t want to stay but it’s too soon to leave
Thought if I tried hard enough I could change it
But it’s changing me

I thought we all could share a vision, there’d be a space where every soul was
Free but that place seems farther away than it used to be

It’s getting hard for me to imagine, am I just tired am I lost in the haze
No black or white just some endless stream in shades of gray
Don’t know how long I can carry on… this way

Don’t want to live in this world any longer
Don’t want to stay but it’s too soon to leave
Thought if I tried hard enough I could change it
But it’s changing me 2 xs

All the insanity that goes on endlessly
Is raining down on me

The ocean tides are raising lies
And they are drowning me

All of the weight from all the hate
Is suffocating me

Just when you thought that no one was listening
You were heard more than you know
All that was broken unspoken in your praying

Right at the moment you started planning
Steps to relieve all your pain
Ten came an unexpected arrival saying, saying

Maybe tomorrow, or the day after
Let’s hold each other until then
When all the sorrow, turns into laughter
I’ll be right there with you my friend
Cuz I’ve been here all along
Don’t let go of me, keep holding on

Love has a way of searching every heart
That is buried in fear
Love has a way of choosing the perfect timing

Right near the end of a final amen then
Ambushing you by surprise
It’s such a feeling, beginning a healing finding reminding

Maybe tomorrow, or the day after
Let’s hold each other until then
When all the sorrow, turns into laughter
I’ll be right there with you my friend
Cuz I’ve been here all along
Don’t let go of me, keep holding on

Instrumental

Maybe tomorrow, or the day after
Let’s hold each other until then
When all the sorrow, turns into laughter
I’ll be right there with you my friend

Maybe tomorrow. or the day after
Let’s hold each other until then
When all the sorrow. turns into laughter
I’ll be right there with you my friend
Don’t let go of me, keep holding on

The fish are jumpin’ and the sky’s so blue
I feel so lucky that my dreams came true
Just another day, just another day here in Paradise

I’m writin’ music like it’s goin’ out of style
When I hear it on the radio it makes me smile
Just another day, just another day here in Paradise…. Paradise

I’m wonderin’ how good fortune found me
I’m glad that all the bad luck’s way behind me
I love my wife and I love my kids
There’s somethin’ special ‘bout the life we’ve lived
Just another day, just another day here in Paradise

Solo

And here’s to all the people listening
And those who don’t, don’t know what you’ve been missing

This fish are still jumpin’ and the sky’s still blue
I get this same feeling when I look at you
Just another day, just another day here in Paradise

I’m feelin’ happy ‘cos I’ve lived the dream
I got to play guitar and love to sing
Just another day, just another day here in Paradise
Just another day, just another day here in Paradise
Just another day, just another day here in Paradise

Electric Guitars by Michael Dowdle

Was I just a dreamer, and was this all a fraud?
Are all the things I once believed in, are not true after all
Once a true believer, now everything seems flawed
Holding on to sanity’s like clinging to a wall

But I’ll stand ready, I am determined
My hands are steady, and my eyes are opened wide
If we’re not ready, freedom just might slip away
One day we’ll wake up, with freedom gone
And we’ll wonderin’, where did we go wrong

Before this all got started, I thought I’d seen it all
I kept thinkin’ how’s this happening to us, if there is a God
I got so heavy hearted, And couldn’t hear the call
My heart was trying to tell me, that Freedom can’t be bought

So I stand ready, I am determined
My hands are steady, and my eyes are opened wide
If we’re not ready, freedom just might slip away
One day we’ll wake up, with freedom gone
And we’ll keep wondering, where did we go wrong

From the day that I was born in the USA
I pledged my allegiance to my country everyday

So I’ll stand ready, I’ll stand determined
My hands are steady, and my eyes are opened wide
So I’ll be ready, No I won’t be denied ‘cos
One day we’ll wake up and he’ll be gone
But we’ll keep wonderin’, why’d it take so long

We stand for freedom, We stand for liberty
We stand for justice, As we cling to Democracy
We are one people, but somehow we lost our way
One day we’ll wake up and he’ll be gone
And we’ll keep wonderin’, why’d it take so long

I’m stuck in
one weird relationship
I can’t win,
And it’s so complicated that I
Spin and spin
It never ends and it’s feeling like
I’m just chasing my tail

She’s got some
Kind of disorder
That can be fun
Til it Turns into horror and then
Turns again
Sweet and adorable
Acting like we are falling in love
It’s just like we are falling in love

Over and over the songs the same
Promises made in the evening
Then she walks out at the break of day
Don’t know why she’s leaving

I have tried
Greeting her happily
Then I hide
Until She chases after me
And when she cries
I snuggle tenderly cuddling up like a ball in her lap
I stay there all the way through her nap

Over and over the songs the same
Promises made in the evening
Then she walks out at the break of day
Don’t know why she’s leaving
Tell me what she’s feeling

On our walks she stops and must be
Worried I am not healing
Must she always tell me HEAL
Like I have not really been listening
I’m stuck in
one weird relationship
I can’t win,
And it’s so complicated that I
Spin and spin
It never ends and it’s feeling like
I’m just chasing my tail

Instrumental

Over and over the songs the same
Promises made in the evening
Then she walks out at the break of day
Don’t know why she’s leaving

I’m stuck in
one weird relationship
I can’t win,
And it’s so complicated that I
Spin and spin
It never ends and it’s feeling like
I’m just chasing my tail
Feeling Llke I’m just chasing my tail

I’m not a drinker or that deep of thinker
(but) After the water was splashed on my face
There in the mirror I saw something weirder
(than)I’d seen before standing in that placeWho were they
staring at me
those faces that were framing mineI didn’t know them but they seemed familiar
(and) I knew what they all hoped to findMostly all those smiling faces were trying
To show me something that I should have known
They’d all been hiding somewhere inside me
Til they could reveal that I’m not alone

Who are they
Staring at me
Those faces looking more like mine
I must have known them cause they seemed familiar
And I knew what they all hoped to find

Kind of lost and kind of broken
Searching for words that rarely are spoken
Needing more friends and less enemies
Is most of the world just people like me?

Walking down main street who’s this that I’m seeing
The faces that smiled at me before dawn
They’re everywhere and none of them scare me
Thank God I found we’re not aloneE

If I could pick one tune I would hum
That brings a magic healing
This would be it, this one just fits
Bringing back all the feelings
That turned me around when I was down
And my heart had stopped believing
What should I call this melody
That always rescues me
Where is it from, this tune I hum

That brings such calm inside me
And it remains, always the same
Whispering things to guide me
To where I should go and who I should know
That friend who walks right beside me
What should I call this melody
That always rescues me

Instrumental

Often the words need not be heard
Music alone’s revealing
You are the truest melody that always rescues me
You are the one true melody that always rescues me

Track 11 – WE OUGHTA KNOW BY NOW

Lyrics + Credits

2 Months, 3 weeks and I’m going crazy
We don’t do well apart
4 hours fifty five minutes and maybe
This time we’ll heal our hearts
I don’t know if we ought to keep trying
Our track record says no
How long will we both keep on denying
We oughta know by now
Say what you wanna say
Tell me you’re gonna stay
This time we’ll both make it last
What has our record been
Til we blow up again
Why are we always repeating the past

I know nothing else matters
And I know the why and the how
Our hearts keeping being shattered
We oughta know by now
Is it madness or just our relapsing
An addiction for sure
How can both of us keep on collapsing
Still craving something more
Say what you wanna say
Tell me you’re gonna stay
This time we’ll both make it last
What has our record been
Til we blow up again
Why are we always repeating the past
I know nothing else matters
And I know the why and the how
Our hearts keeping being shattered
We oughta know by now
Who knows what’s the truth and the secret
We just keep on being so blind
How long until we both discover
What it seems we don’t know how to find

1 review for Singles (Album)

  1. James Lowe

John Batdorf FindsHope “In The Middle of It All” on Singles

The veteran singer-songwriter talks about an unexpected 11-song album, writing through a divided world, the healing power of music, radio support and why, after more than five decades, he still refuses to “settle.”
    By KJAG Radio

For John Batdorf, songwriting has never simply been about making records.

It is about trying to make sense of life while it is happening.

That philosophy sits at the heart of Singles, an 11-song collection that wasn’t originally conceived as an album at all. Instead, it grew organically—one song, one idea and one emotional reaction at a time—until Batdorf suddenly realized he had created a complete body of work.

The catalyst was “Suffering,” written with longtime collaborator Michael McLean.

Batdorf says completing that song seemed to open the creative floodgates. One song quickly became several. Six songs were in progress before long, eventually becoming ten. Even when Batdorf thought the project was complete, another song—“Maybe Tomorrow”—demanded to be written.

That willingness to follow a song wherever it leads has been part of Batdorf’s creative life for decades.

Sometimes, he says, an artist simply has to get out of the way and allow the art to determine the destination. “Suffering” did exactly that, eventually becoming the foundation for an album he hadn’t planned on making.

Releasing Music While It Still Matters
There is another unusual element to Singles: Batdorf did not wait until all 11 songs were completed before allowing listeners to hear them.

He wrote them, recorded them and began releasing them as they were finished.

For an artist whose recording career stretches back to the early 1970s, that represents a dramatically different way of working.

Batdorf remembers an era when record companies largely controlled the process—choosing producers, developing material, booking studios and determining when an album would finally reach the public.

Home recording technology eventually changed that relationship, giving independent artists unprecedented control over their own recordings.

By 2020, Batdorf had embraced another change: instead of holding new music until he had an entire album, he began releasing songs when they were ready.

    For him, immediacy matters.

The world moves quickly, particularly when songs respond to cultural anxiety, division and events happening in real time. Waiting too long can cause a song written for a particular moment to become an afterthought.

“Release the songs while listeners can understand and feel what you are singing about,” Batdorf explained.

That strategy helped shape Singles. Positive radio response to “Suffering” encouraged him to keep writing, leading to “Time Bombs” and eventually the rest of the record.

“In The Middle of It All”: Where Hope Actually Lives
Among the album’s most important songs is its opening track, “In The Middle of It All,” another Batdorf-McLean collaboration.

And Batdorf says the song’s meaning goes much deeper than simply telling people not to withdraw during difficult times.

When he began working on the lyrics, he found himself wishing a song could contain something like 20 different choruses—each one expressing another situation in which someone might have reached a place in life where hope seemed completely gone.

The moments when the internal voice says:

    There is no way out.

    Nothing is going to change.

It is time to give up.

But Batdorf’s reason for writing about those moments is ultimately hopeful.

The song argues that the love, encouragement, support and hope people desperately search for aren’t necessarily waiting somewhere far away.

We can exhaust ourselves looking for some distant answer. We can become frustrated because we believe we haven’t discovered the place where healing, connection or encouragement supposedly exists.

But, as Batdorf explains it, hope isn’t simply “out there somewhere.”

It is in the middle of everything.

That idea gives the album’s opening song a much greater significance.

“In The Middle of It All” isn’t asking listeners to pretend difficult circumstances don’t exist. It is asking them to engage with life despite them.

Too often, people respond to despair by withdrawing or becoming isolated. Batdorf sees that isolation as part of the problem. We cannot simply wait for someone else to repair everything while remaining disconnected ourselves.

Sometimes the way forward requires stepping directly into the middle of the struggle—the very place where we may discover the encouragement and human connection we assumed had disappeared.

As the opening song on Singles, it establishes much of what follows: darkness is acknowledged, but surrender is not the final answer.

    Writing Through an “Unfamiliar” World
That tension between darkness and hope appears repeatedly throughout Singles.

On “Unfamiliar,” Batdorf confronts how different today’s world feels from the future he once imagined.

He came of age during the volatile 1960s, an era defined by political conflict, assassinations, Kent State and enormous cultural upheaval.

Yet Batdorf believed lessons had been learned.

Now, with grown children and grandchildren, he views today’s instability from a very different perspective.

The concern isn’t merely about what the world means for him personally anymore. It is about what future generations are inheriting.

    That can become overwhelming.

But Batdorf also believes artists can help people navigate those emotions.

Music performed that role in his own life. Songs gave him hope and helped him feel less alone while growing up. He still believes music can perform that function today—even if all a song accomplishes is giving someone enough hope to make it through another difficult moment.

And Then There’s “Puppy Love 2.0”
Not every song on Singles carries the weight of the world.

Batdorf and McLean also allow themselves to have some fun.

    Enter “Puppy Love 2.0.”

No elaborate metaphor is required here.

    It really is puppy love.

Batdorf says McLean unexpectedly arrived with lyrics about the joys of puppyhood. His initial reaction was essentially: A song about a puppy?

Then he realized how cleverly the idea worked.

Batdorf even recorded barking dogs for the ending—a production decision that still cracks him up whenever he hears it.

After songs confronting suffering, social division and uncertainty, something playful gives the album breathing room.

“Maybe Tomorrow” Brings the Hope Back
The final group of songs also includes “Maybe Tomorrow,” which arrived almost immediately after the darker “Unfamiliar.”

Batdorf describes the track as a necessary emotional response to what came before it.

If “Unfamiliar” acknowledges darkness, “Maybe Tomorrow” provides the possibility that tomorrow may still offer something different.

    The song arrived extraordinarily quickly.

Batdorf says it seemed almost as though the song were begging to become part of the project, and he wrote and recorded it at “warp speed.”

That contrast was important enough that the album’s sequencing reflects it intentionally.

Songwriters Shouldn’t Be Afraid of the World
Batdorf has never subscribed to the idea that musicians should avoid uncomfortable subjects.

He grew up listening to artists including The Beatles, Buffalo Springfield, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon—songwriters who weren’t afraid to respond to what was happening around them.

Those songs mattered because they gave listeners something deeper than entertainment.

They reminded people they weren’t alone.

Batdorf has occasionally encountered listeners who tell him to stick to music and “stay in his lane” when he writes about social issues.

    His response is straightforward:

This has always been his lane.

He believes strong songwriters can communicate serious ideas without turning the song into a lecture. Sometimes the message arrives directly. Sometimes it works better through metaphor, personal experience or even humor.

The song ultimately determines the approach.

“Whatever seems the most organic approach gets the nod,” Batdorf says. “The song idea evolves sometimes on its own and I just follow along.”

    “Never Settle”
Considering Batdorf made his first recording with Batdorf and Rodney in 1971 at only 19 years old, the enthusiasm with which he speaks about new songs is striking.

He does not sound like an artist merely maintaining a catalog.

He sounds like somebody still chasing the next great song.

Batdorf’s personal songwriting motto is simple:

    “Never Settle.”

He views the ability to write music as a gift, and taking that gift for granted would be a form of disrespect.

Over the decades, his career has traveled through numerous different phases—recording artist, staff songwriter, commercial producer, studio singer, television and film composer and eventually back around to recording his own material again.

He admits that, like most young musicians, he once dreamed about becoming a rock star.

Life took him in directions he could never have anticipated.

    He has no regrets.

Batdorf even wrote a song called “Famous Enough,” reflecting his realization that success didn’t ultimately require achieving the exact level of stardom he imagined as a child.

He got to spend his life making music.

    That was success.

    Radio Still Means Something
For all the transformation that has occurred in the music industry, one thing has not lost its magic for Batdorf:

hearing a song on the radio.

Batdorf credits AirPlay Direct with helping independent musicians connect with stations around the world without the enormous expense that once came with mailing hundreds of promotional CDs and one-sheets.

But beyond the technology, there is something more personal involved.

In a world where algorithms increasingly decide what listeners encounter, an actual radio programmer choosing a song still carries emotional weight.

“It means everything to any artist who has poured their heart and soul into their recordings,” Batdorf says.

And there remains a particular experience that streaming hasn’t been able to duplicate.

Driving down the road and suddenly hearing your own recording coming through the radio speakers.

    Batdorf calls it magical.

The Next Song Is Already Calling
With Singles complete at 11 tracks, one might expect John Batdorf to finally close the studio door for a while.

    Apparently songwriting has other plans.

Batdorf says another idea has already appeared.

If he finishes it—and if the song meets his standards—he is considering adding it to Singles as a bonus track.

That might be the perfect ending to this particular chapter of John Batdorf’s story.

An album that began accidentally with one song may not actually be finished after all.

Because after a lifetime of songwriting, Batdorf is still listening for whatever comes next.

And perhaps that is the larger message running through Singles.

    The world can become dark.

    Life can become unfamiliar.

There are moments when hope appears absent.

But Batdorf isn’t interested in pretending those places don’t exist.

He wants to write from inside them.

Because sometimes the thing we’re searching for isn’t waiting beyond the struggle.

Sometimes, as “In The Middle of It All” reminds us, hope is already right there with us—

    in the middle of everything.
