“Side II” by John Batdorf

“Side II” is my latest EP release and contains 6 brand new songs written by myself and Michael McLean. The music was recorded over the last six months in my studio here is Central Oregon. For me, releasing an EP is a great way to get songs out there while they are still fresh and relevant and these songs are relevant indeed. The opening track, “I Saved My Finest Love Song Til Now” is a song about the lasting impact music can have on an audience at a show as well as when the artist has long since moved on. Cut two, “Dark Wind Blowin’” is a reflection of the times we live in today and how many of us struggle at times to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Cut three, “If I Could Make The Whole World See” is a song dealing with our country and how it is divided. Accepting diversity is one of the keys to compromise and coming together as a nation. Cut number 4, “Why’s My Heart Broken” is a song about how cyberbullying has spiraled out of control and its’ affect on all of us. Cut five, “Are We Ever Gonna Be Alright” is a question many of us are asking ourselves after two years of living in a Pandemic. The final cut “Daddy Doesn’t Love You” is a song about how our perspective as a parent changes as our children grow into adulthood.

BTW, I can’t wait til “Side III” happens!!!

Songs & Lyrics

I Saved My Finest Love Song Til Now

I saved my finest love song until now
Right at the end of the show
One you’ll remember most on your way back home
I’ll sing it now before I must go

The bridge will link us together
And help us carry on
Our own stairway to heaven
But this one’s not that long

LISTEN FOR THE PART THAT SAYS I LOVE YOU
SING IT WHEN I’VE GONE AWAY
REMEMBER JUST HOW MUCH I HOPED TO STAY
THINK ABOUT THE HOOK THAT KEEPS REPEATING
THIS’LL BE THE TUNE TO DRY THOSE TEARS
WHEN I’M GONE THE SONG’S STILL HERE

I have been waiting for the perfect time
The perfect moment is here
This is the song that’s only yours and mine
Our special music souvenir

The bridge will link us together
And help us carry on
Our own stairway to heaven
But this one’s not that long

CHORUS

This is the one I hope stays in your heart
And it will never leave you when we’re apart

CHORUS

Dark Wind Blowin’

My head is down
Searching for a refuge
The leaves are circling in the wind
Coat buttoned up
Feet sloshin’ in the rain
Marching to this battle hymn

I must be lost
Don’t know just how lost I am
The landmarks all disappeared
I cry for help
But all the leaves just fly around
And they just don’t want to hear
They just don’t wanna hear

Dark wind blowin’
Tossin’ my spirit all around
In the cyclone
How am I supposed to reach the ground
Gotta reach the ground……yeah

A soul on fire
Burning in the freezing wind
Earth and water waiting there
I thought to fly
Was all I wanted then
Now I can’t land and say a prayer
Now I can’t land and say a prayer

<em Tossin’ my spirit all around
In the cyclone
How am I supposed to reach the ground

Oh oh dark wind blowin’
Tossin’ my spirit all around
In the cyclone
How am I supposed to reach the ground
Gotta reach the ground
Gotta reach the ground……yeah

repeat …

If I Could Make The Whole World See

If I could make the world see
Exactly how it ought to be
And everyone agreed with me
Would there be peace and harmony?

If I could wave a magic wand
So everyone just got along
And all the strife I’d known was gone
How long til I knew something’s wrong
How long til I knew something’s wrong

I’ve been dreaming of an intervening
All well-meaning stop the fighting and start believing

Does heaven hear the fervent cries
To bless the righteous on our side
When we all give a loud amen
To prayers for us and not for them

The song we sing in unison
With all the other parts unsung
That chorus of the chosen ones
Will not know what it could become
Will not hear all it could become

It’s been seeming all we do is so demeaning
I’ve been feeling something’s got to change completely

Perhaps the world I want to see
Is not where no one disagrees
I’m craving a stability
That comes with some civility

If I could make the world see
Exactly how it ought to be
And everyone agreed with me
I just might miss the chance to see
The beauty in diversity
The beauty of diversity
Oh, if I could make the whole world see.

Why’s My Heart Broken

I saw this post on my facebook page / It was so mean and filled with rage
And like a fire that was out of control / Identities they probably stole
I wanna know what’s goin’ on. So much darkness so little dawn
I wanna know what’s goin’ on
Why’s My heart broken ah ah ah ah

The cowards all started pilin’ on / They had no shame there was nothin’ wrong
And from the shadows they bully me / Because no one can see
I wanna know what’s goin’ on
So much darkness too little dawn
I wanna know what’s goin’ on
Why’s My heart broken. ah ah ah ah

How do I defend my self /And not do this to someone else
Where can I turn for help
Put that damn screen on the shelf
I wanna know what’s goin’ on
So much darkness so little dawn
I wanna know what’s goin’ on
My heart is broken. Ah ah ah ah

Are We Ever Gonna Be All Right

Are we ever gonna be all right
Is this tunnel even going anywhere
At the end of it will there be light or just
More darkness waiting for us there

Will we ever when the day is done
Both remember how to have a little fun
Will we ever find some peace of mind
Before tomorrow comes

Echoing through the hills of time
Every generation hears
What is said as they try to climb
A mountain of all their fears
When they reach each look out spot
They all miss the view
All they see are the fears they’ve got
To face to make it through

Will we ever have a family
Are they ever gonna play out in the yard
Are we ever gonna find some time
To just unwind when life is not so hard

Are we always gonna be out done
By our friends in every race that they have run
Will we ever find some peace of mind
Before tomorrow comes

As we make our final ascent
Where’s the joy remembering how our time was spent
Will the answers hit us like a rock
Or will we keep on asking for what we haven’t got

Are we ever gonna be all right
Are we ever gonna not move quite so slow
Or will we just complain about status or
About the status quo

Will the world ever get back to
The better one that we came from
Will we ever find some peace of mind
Before tomorrow comes
Before tomorrow comes
Oh before tomorrow comes

Daddy Doesn’t Love You

Air B&B in Hawaii
A couple months to make the plan
All the family is coming
Building new castles in the sand
And as the sun is setting
We toast the memories here in Molokai
And then I hear myself saying
These words before we say good bye, bye bye bye oh

Daddy don’t love you like he used to do
Working all night long when the rent was due
Tryin’ to find a way to make up for
The times He wasn’t there for you
Daddy doesn’t love you like he used to do

Just the waves on the ocean
Accompany what’s in their eyes
What brings on all this emotion
As he keeps explaining why, why, why why oh

Daddy don’t love you like he used to do
Hide and go seek and playin’ catch with you
Helpin’ with the homework though you all knew

He never had a clue
Daddy doesn’t love you like he used to do

All the ways I tried to say without sayin’ the words
Today’s the day I gotta say some things that you may not have heard

Daddy don’t love you like he used to do
I’m so proud of who you are and the things you choose
Can’t believe how much that you have learned
Your daddy never really knew

Daddy don’t love you like he used to do
No more agonizing how to get you through
Love you so much more than I did before
And hope that you can feel it’s true
Daddy doesn’t love you like he used to do

“Well last night, January 26, 2022, John sent out the Master to his new EP.
CD to follow in about a month. So I’m limited as to knowing the actual name of the EP or even the Song titles. However, I listened to all of his new Songs this morning twice so far. And I have to say, John’s Magic still continues in this EP.
Every Song Very Melodic and Interesting. I do not know how he does it !
His Songwriting Creativity is Never Ending. Thanks John, for all your Hard Work. You Inspire Me every time I hear a new Song by You. You are truly Gifted in Songwriting, Vocals and Guitar.”

  2. John Batdorf

John Batdorf’s newest “magical” song, off is brand new EP, SIDE II, “Daddy Doesn’t Love You….” has, after 50-years of me following this good friend of mine and whom I have Idolized the entirety of those #50-Years writing songs and making albums, has at 70-yrs. old (just shy) …continued to find the musical symmetry of tugging at my heart strings about a Father and his Family (Melanie his wife, Brett and Matt (twins) and their Grandkids, on a family vacation they took in Hawaii a few months back.

The song encapsulates a Father’s lifetime of being one of the best musical artists still around, and all those #50-yrs. writing and sing songs, putting out somewhere along #20-LP’s, Albums, Disk, EPs’. He just kept up with the changing times and hit a “homerun” of a tune that brought tears to my eyes, doing the same thing with wife, children (#2), now grandkids, John has proven the point that you are as only as strong as you allow yourself to never get discouraged, never give-up, and followed the work ethic of never getting discouraged or giving -up to still raise his entire family as a Father most of all! “DADDY DOESN’T LOVE YOU…” hits the keynote worthiness of life and taking care of his family. John once told me, “It was never about the money, Mike, it was always the music and following my heart to seek it’s magic I was born with! This song, on SIDE II EP captures the humility and heartfelt reason John has succeeded in everything he does, musically. Happiness can only exist in accepting one’s inner soul. I cannot wait until the next #5-#10 EP’s he puts out, which I believe he is bound to do. Anyone who has followed him from the beginning (Batdorf and Rodney, 1971), I hope can humbly accept my love of this song as a 70-Yr. old Father and a lifetime of Love, Peace and Happiness and like the stars, you don’t always see them but with songs of this nature, you know they are always there.—-Mike Hays

  3. John Batdorf

I was privy to a private listen, and I can honestly say, the only problem with John’s new EP is IT’S TOO F’IN SHORT!! Great songs and singing better than ever. The complete, albeit short, package!! David Spero
